THE MATEMATEAONGA TRACK – accessed via the Kohi Saddle, Stratford, or the Whanganui River

Originally an old Maori trail, this track takes you into the depths of the Whanganui National Park, through untouched native forest, on your journey to the Whanganui River.

  • The track is 42 km, and has 4 serviced huts
  • Allow 3-5 days one way

 

THE MANGAPURUA TRACK – accessed via the Ruatiti Road, Raetihi, or the Whanganui River

This track was originally the lifeline for the farming settlers of the Mangapurua Valley, linking their remote existence to the outside world, via the Ruatiti Road. Now part of the National Cycleway, this walking track is very well maintained, and includes The Bridge to Nowhere as you near the Whanganui River.

  • The track is 38 km, no huts, tent required
  • Allow 2-3 days one way
