RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011
The countdown to the start of the Rugby World Cup 2011 is on. Whanganui is hosting the 36 man squad USA Rugby team "The Eagles", who are currently ranked 17th in the world. We are all very excited about hosting an international team, but of course in our hearts we are all willing the All Blacks to do us proud - and bring the Webb Ellis trophy HOME!!!!!!!
Our region is getting behind the RWC 2011, and is organising an extravaganza in the form of ongoing activities and exhibitions.
The REAL Whanganui Festival comprises over 70 events, making it one of the biggest REAL New Zealand festivals and certainly the biggest that the Wanganui district has ever seen - including the established Glass Festival, Literary Festival, a sample of Artists Open Studios as well as exhibitions, live performances, art workshops, operetta, music and much more.
VERO VINTAGE CAR RALLY 2012 (VCC RALLY 2012)
The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) hosted its first international rally in 1965. The 6th International Haast Rally wound its way through the newly opened Haast Pass Highway on the South Island's picturesque West Coast. The rally's great success trail blazed seven more internationals between 1972 and 2006.
It is now the turn of Whanganui to proudly host the international world of vintage and veteran vehicles in January 2012, and those who will flock to enjoy this feast of character vehicles. Event organisers say entrants are coming from United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the United States of America.
2012 IUM JET SPRINT WORLD SERIES - 18th and 19th FEBRUARY 2012
The dynamic team at Shelter View Promotions Ltd have secured the World Series for 2012,
"This opportunity is just what we had in mind when the circuit was established," Julia Murray, Shelter View organiser, said. "This is big and we are determined to make the most of it for the circuit, for NZ jet boating and for Wanganui." Mrs Murray said it was unlikely the spectator area would change much for the event. "It would be great to have a grandstand in place but we farm this property the rest of the time, so after a couple of days racing we put the cattle back in there," she said.
Local husband and wife team - Leighton and Kellie Minnell, also New Zealand Jet Sprint Superboat Champions, are licking their lips at the prospect of challenging the world's best on their home turf.
